Off-road adventure/dual-sport motorcycle training

The Core Fundamentals of Off-Road Dual Sport/Adventure Riding

Whether you’re a beginner seeking to build a foundation or an advancing rider looking to refine your technique, our training is designed to significantly improve your skills and confidence on challenging terrains.

We utilize terrain-specific drills focused on the five core fundamentals of off-road riding: Vision, Clutch & Throttle Control, Balance, Body Position, and Braking.

What You’ll Learn:

  1. Motorcycle Control: Work to achieving maximum handling on diverse terrain. Our training covers precise throttle/brake modulation, correct body positioning, and effective steering for tight turns, steep inclines and loose surfaces.

  2. Obstacle Navigation & Traction: Practice navigating rocks, mud, and rutted trails. We teach you how to analyze the changing traction environment, choose the right line, and adjust your speed accordingly.

  3. Cornering Techniques: Maintain momentum and control through turns. Focus includes proper vision, optimizing entry/exit lines, weight distribution, and advanced throttle control.

  4. Emergency Maneuvers: Essential for trail safety. We cover quick and effective emergency braking, evasion tactics, and rapid turns to respond to unexpected obstacles.

  5. Trail Awareness: Elevate your safety with situational training. Learn to quickly recognize trail conditions and anticipate hazards or the movements of other riders.

Addtional Benefits or Training?

  • Skill Development: Transform your handling and riding confidence.

  • Safety First: Gain the awareness and skills necessary to mitigate risks and prevent accidents.

  • Community: Connect with fellow riders and build lasting friendships and riding partnerships.

Level 1 Beginner

Off-road skills don’t happen overnight.  We want you to feel comfortable when you transition from the pavement to the dirt, and our training will help you build the finesse required to adventure ride safely.  Breaking down each movement into easy-to-understand steps is the key to our training.

The Triple Threat—or clutch, brake, and throttle—is one example of our focus on the fundamentals of controlling the motorcycle at slow speeds.  By re-learning how to precisely control the actions of clutching, braking, and throttling, you’ll maximize your riding capability using this core principle.  The Triple Threat is the backbone of our training program, and it carries over into every exercise we do. One thing is for sure…you will have a lot more confidence, the necessary tools, and refined skills to help you “Ride your Ride.”

Level 2 Intermediate

Continuing from our Level I class and/or building upon the skills you have already, this 2-day training class further refines your control of the motorcycle through the mastery of “The Triple Threat” – the Clutch, Brake, and Throttle at slow speeds, over terrain and during tight maneuvering.  Body position is critical in Level II training and will be explained and practiced at length.

Level II Training is for life-long learners; those who realize motorcycling is a perishable skill.  At the end of this two-day training event, you’ll be ready to ride more technical trails, further gain confidence and become a better rider. Practice is still key, however. Ride with others who have good riding techniques, display safe and considerate motorcycling etiquette and encourage you to “ride your own ride.”

Level 3 Advanced

You don’t have to aspire to ride like Chris Birch to take our Level III Training, but you do need a strong desire to perfect your riding techniques. You must also take our Level II Training or have taken another advanced level training elsewhere as a prerequisite to this class. Offered exclusively at our location in breathtaking Ouray, CO. This course will be taught by West38Moto Founder and Chief Training Instructor, Dusty Wessels and 2018 USA GS Trophy Champion Tom Thompson. This 2-day training class builds on the mastery of clutch, brake, and throttle control, and further expands on proper body positioning and understanding weight transfer at both low and higher speeds on dirt and gravel.

Level III Training is for advanced riders who are also life-long learners and want to keep their skills sharp for every riding season.  This class is also a great for advanced riders who simply want a good refresher each year.
